Salman Rushdie is likely correct that not all those who defended him would today rush as quickly to his defense. It would likely be because of who has been as a person and writer since and not related to who he was as a writer and person prior to the fatwa. As balance, events worldwide and greater political fractalization would cause many who did not rush to his corner then to sprint (at least via social media) now and take up his "cause." Maybe he'll like the new group of "friends" better? If for whatever reason he should find himself here reading, I encourage him to remember and take solace from what he wrote in Midnight's Children: "Sometimes legends make reality, and become more useful than the facts."
